Annual Defensible Space Chipping for 2016

The annual Defensible Space Chipping program is scheduled to begin on February 29, 2016. Please review the scheduled chipping dates and make sure your cut material is placed in front of your home no later than the first day chipping is scheduled to begin in your area. Also, make sure that your cut vegetation is visible from the roadway and placed in front of your home no sooner than 2 weeks before chipping is scheduled to begin in your area. Crews will not make second passes through chipping areas.

Get Ready for Defensible Space Chipping

Just a reminder to everyone in the Assessment District that we will be starting the annual Defensible Space Chipping program starting on March 3rd, 2014.

THERE HAVE BEEN CHANGES TO OUR CHIPPING SCHEDULE FOR ALL AREAS IN 2014. Please refer to the newsletter that was sent out  in January for the 2014 schedule and map to determine the appropriate time to place your cut vegetation out.

Defensible Space Chipping Completed for 2013

We have finished our annual Defensible Space Chipping Project for 2013! This year we successfully chipped over 400 tons of vegetation within the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District. Thank you to all of the homeowners who have once again made our annual Defensible Space Chipping Project a success.

Next years schedule of chipping areas will be posted in our newsletter that will go out in early 2014 and will also be available online. Make sure you review all the information provided when you receive the newsletter as the starting dates for each chipping area can change annually. The Lower Riviera chip area will be the final chipping area for this years annual chipping program in the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District. A huge thanks to all of the homeowners for ensuring that your piles were out on time and free of non-chippable material. This year we will have successfully chipped over 300 tons of material and recycled 100% of the produced chips!

This year we have already chipped over 100 tons of vegetation and recycled 100% of the chipped material!

Chipping Reminder: Exotic Pest Plants

To reduce the spread of exotic invasive plants, we would like to remind all homeowners in the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District to not place any cut vegetation for chipping that contain these non-native species:

Castor Bean

Arundo

All species of ivy

Fennel

French/Soft/Scotch/Spanish Broom

Ice Plant

Tobacco Weed

Pampas Grass

Fountain Grass

Mediterranean Grass

Tamarisk

Any kind of Bamboo

Our chipping program has been very successful over the years in recyclingng 99% of our chipped material by providing homeowners in the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District the option of utilizing their chipped material for ground cover, soil stability, and/or to maintain nutrient content in soils.

By keeping these species out of your cut and stacked vegetation, you are helping to reduce the spread of unwanted exotics in the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District.

2013 Defensible Space Chipping.

DEFENSIBLE SPACE CHIPPING SERVICES are provided to all district property owners in an effort to assist in complying with the City Fire Department defensible space clearance requirement deadline of June 15 each year. Chipping services encourage property owners to create defensible space and provide a cost effective way to dispose of cut material.


***THERE WILL BE SOME MAJOR CHANGES TO THE 2013 CHIPPING SCHEDULE***

It is still scheduled to run March-June, however, we will be adjusting the timing of most of the chip areas to adjust for the amount of brush that we have received in previous years. Stay tuned, as we will work to get the schedule up in December.

The chipping schedule can always be found inside the front cover of your newsletter that is sent to each property in January of each year.

Defensible Space Chipping Hits New Record!

In an effort to comply with the City Fire Department defensible space clearance requirement deadline of June 15, 2011, homeowners in the high fire hazard area have been busier than ever preparing for the upcoming fire season.

Each year, chipping services are offered to those homeowners who reside within the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District located in portions of the Foothill and Extreme Foothill High Fire Hazard Areas of Santa Barbara’s foothills.

Chipping services are provided to encourage property owners to create defensible space and provide a cost effective way to dispose of cut material. This year we removed a record 500 tons of chipped material. That is higher than any other previous year since the district was formed in 2006.

The Fire Department would like to thank all of the property owners who took advantage of this service in order to create a more fire safe home, neighborhood and city.

Chipping Continues

It's that time of year again. We are a few weeks into our spring time chipping program and have seen more brush put out by homeowners than ever before.

We are wrapping up chipping in the LAS TUNAS area this week and will begin the SAN ROQUE/ONTARE area on Monday, April 11th.

Planning For Fire Season

It is hard to plan for fire season with the chilly, wet weather we have been having. However, before we know it our warm, hot, windy weather will be back and it always pays to be prepared. As an added service to those homeowners who are within the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District we have a defensible space chipping program to help you do just that.

Each year, in the spring, we rotate though the district with our crews to chip any brush that homeowners may have cut in order to meet the City's defensible space requirements. As an added planning and preparation tool, we have set the schedule for the upcoming 2011 chipping program. We often get questions about the timing of our crews. So folks, here it is...lets get ready!!!
